SHORT BIO
Jill Caviglia-Harris is Professor of Economics in the Economics and Environmental Studies Departments at Salisbury University. Her research is focused on understanding the underlying tradeoffs between development and deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon and identifying answers to complex (and often politically energized) questions concerning the degree to which the ecological costs of deforestation are offset by local gains from economic development. She also works on investigating best practices for teaching and motivating students. Caviglia-Harris’ research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and published in journals such as the Journal of Environmental Economics and Management, World Development, Environment and Development Economics, and the Journal of Economic Education. She was awarded Salisbury University’s Distinguished Faculty Award for excellence in teaching, research and service in 2004, the 2010 State of Maryland Board of Regent’s Award for excellence in teaching, the Salisbury University 2010 Outstanding Mentor Award, the 2010 Southern Economic Association Kenneth G. Elzinga Teaching Award, the 2012-2013 Wilson H. Elkins Professorship, University System of Maryland, and a 2013-2014 Leopold Leadership Fellowship from Stanford University. As a result of her Leopold training, Caviglia-Harris also teaches workshops on how to communicate complex research findings to general audiences. Dr. Caviglia-Harris received her B.S. in Mathematical Economics and B.A. in English Literature from Binghamton University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Tennessee. At Salisbury University, she teaches courses in environmental and natural resource economics and microeconomics. She is currently on a Fulbright Fellowship in the Amazonian state of Rondônia, Brazil with the objective to build capacity and engage more faculty and students from the Federal University of Rondônia in the co-development of research questions and answers.
